SMAP (x86) & PAN (ARM64): Supervisor Mode User-Space Access Prevention and Fake Kernel Object Neutralization

1. Overview & Threat Model

1.1 Targeted Threat: Confused-Deputy & Fake Kernel Object Dereference Attacks

  • Residual Attack Surface After SMEP / PXN:
  • SMEP (Supervisor Mode Execution Prevention) and PXN (Privileged Execute-Never) prevent the kernel (Ring 0 / EL1) from executing code located at user-space (Ring 3 / EL0) virtual addresses.
  • However, under classic MMU page table permission rules (\(U/S=1\), \(AP=01\)), supervisor mode retained unrestricted data read and write permissions over user-accessible memory pages.
  • Mechanism of Confused-Deputy & Fake Kernel Object Exploitation:
  • An unprivileged user-space process crafts a dummy kernel structure (struct fake_kernel_cred, forged struct file_operations, fake vtable, or ROP pivot gadget) in user memory at an easily predictable or fixed address (< TASK_SIZE).
  • The attacker triggers a kernel vulnerability (e.g., Use-After-Free dangling pointer, type confusion, or unvalidated pointer dereference) to redirect a kernel pointer variable to point to this user-space address.
  • When the kernel dereferences this pointer (*(volatile unsigned long *)user_ptr or cred->uid), the MMU permits the supervisor data load.
  • The kernel consumes the forged user data as trusted metadata, granting root privileges or diverting control flow, entirely bypassing KASLR.
  • Core Defense Philosophy of SMAP & PAN:
  • Enforce hardware-level MMU access prevention: while the CPU runs in supervisor mode (Ring 0 / EL1), any direct data load (LDR, MOV) or store (STR, MOV) to a user-mode page (\(U/S=1\), EL0 accessible) is immediately trapped.
  • All direct pointer dereferences are denied, restricting user memory access solely to explicit, validated usercopy APIs (copy_from_user(), copy_to_user()).

1.2 Intuitive Real-World Analogy: The Bank Manager vs Customer Slip Box Metaphor

  • Analogy Description:
  • The operating system kernel (Ring 0 / EL1) is the bank branch manager's private vault and office, while user space (Ring 3 / EL0) is the public lobby table where any customer can walk in and write notes.
  • Before Hardening (clearcpuid=smap, pan=off):
    • The branch manager (kernel) processing a high-value transaction ignores the internal authenticated ledger and instead picks up an unauthenticated scrap of paper left on the public lobby table ("Transfer 10 million dollars to the bearer immediately").
    • The manager directly reads the scrap with bare hands and stamps approval, allowing any fraudster (attacker) who placed a note in the lobby to drain the vault (root escalation).
  • With Hardening Enforced (SMAP / PAN Active):
    • Biometric and motion sensors (hardware MMU) monitor the manager's hands.
    • The moment the manager attempts to touch any document lying on the public lobby table directly, the sensor sounds an alarm and drops an armored steel shutter (hardware Page Fault #PF / Data Abort), instantly stopping the transaction.
    • To review a customer document, the manager must use the official bulletproof intake window (stac / copy_from_user), which temporarily opens under strict protocol, validates and copies the document, and immediately slams shut (clac).

2. Kernel Internal Architecture

2.1 x86_64 Architecture: CR4.SMAP (Supervisor Mode Access Prevention)

  • CR4 Control Register Bit 21 & EFLAGS.AC (Alignment Check):
  • Introduced in Intel Haswell (2013) and Broadwell architectures.
  • When \(CR4.SMAP = 1\), any supervisor mode (CPL 0, 1, 2) read or write to a page marked \(U/S=1\) triggers a hardware Page Fault (#PF) with error code bit 3 set (Access Violation).
  • However, when EFLAGS.AC (Bit 18) is set to 1, supervisor mode is temporarily permitted to access user memory.
  • Initialized automatically during CPU boot via arch/x86/kernel/cpu/common.c:
    /* arch/x86/kernel/cpu/common.c */
    static __always_inline void setup_smap(struct cpuinfo_x86 *c)
    {
        unsigned long eflags = native_save_fl();
        BUG_ON(eflags & X86_EFLAGS_AC);

        if (cpu_has(c, X86_FEATURE_SMAP))
            cr4_set_bits(X86_CR4_SMAP);
    }

  • Authorized Usercopy Window: stac and clac Instructions:
  • The kernel uses stac (Set Alignment Check) to open the access window (EFLAGS.AC = 1) immediately before copying user data, and resets it with clac (Clear Alignment Check, EFLAGS.AC = 0) immediately afterwards:
    /* arch/x86/include/asm/smap.h */
    #define __ASM_STAC  .byte 0x0f, 0x01, 0xcb    /* stac instruction */
    #define __ASM_CLAC  .byte 0x0f, 0x01, 0xca    /* clac instruction */

2.2 ARM64 (AArch64) Architecture: PAN (Privileged Access Never)

  • ARMv8.1-A Hardware PSTATE.PAN (Bit 22) & SCTLR_EL1.SPAN:
  • Mandatory architectural feature from ARMv8.1-A onward.
  • When \(PSTATE.PAN = 1\), any unprivileged data load (LDR) or store (STR) from EL1 to an EL0-mapped virtual address generates a Data Abort (Permission Fault).
  • Legitimate user data transfers use dedicated unprivileged load/store instructions (LDTR, STTR) which enforce EL0 translation without clearing the global PAN state, or temporarily clear PAN via MSR PAN, #0.
  • SCTLR_EL1.SPAN (Bit 23): When cleared (0), the hardware automatically sets PSTATE.PAN = 1 on exception entry to EL1.
  • Software Emulation for Older Cores (CONFIG_ARM64_SW_TTBR0_PAN):
  • For ARMv8.0 cores lacking hardware PAN (e.g. Cortex-A53, Cortex-A72), Linux provides CONFIG_ARM64_SW_TTBR0_PAN.
  • On entry to EL1, the kernel swaps TTBR0_EL1 with an empty reserved translation table, physically removing user address mappings from kernel space. The legitimate user mapping is restored only within the scope of copy_from_user().

3. Hands-on Lab Implementation

3.1 Vulnerable Target Driver (vuln_smap.c)

  • Exposed via /proc/vuln_smap (mode 0666):
  • Hardware Telemetry:
    • x86_64: __read_cr4() & X86_CR4_SMAP, native_save_fl() & X86_EFLAGS_AC, boot_cpu_has(X86_FEATURE_SMAP).
    • ARM64: system_uses_hw_pan(), system_uses_ttbr0_pan(), boot command line pan=off.
  • Direct Dereference Probing Logic:
    • Accepts a target user virtual address (< TASK_SIZE).
    • Base (clearcpuid=smap / pan=off): Directly dereferences the user pointer (*(volatile unsigned long *)user_addr) in Ring 0 without stac, capturing the magic value (0xDEADBEEFCAFE1337) and logging the vulnerability.
    • Hardened (smap=on / pan=on): Inspects hardware control registers and blocks the direct read, logging that hardware MMU protection prevented the access.

3.2 Confused-Deputy Exploit PoC (exploit.c)

  • Executed by unprivileged user lab (UID 1000):
  • Declares a dummy credential structure (struct fake_kernel_cred) in user space:
    struct fake_kernel_cred {
        uint64_t magic;      /* 0xDEADBEEFCAFE1337ULL */
        uint32_t uid;        /* 0 (root) */
        uint32_t gid;        /* 0 (root) */
        char label[32];      /* "fake_root_credentials" */
    };

  • Sends the address of this fake object to /proc/vuln_smap to request direct kernel reading.
  • Verifies whether the direct dereference succeeded (vulnerable) or was blocked by hardware MMU.

3.3 In-Guest Verification Runner (test.sh)

  • Automated test script /bin/test_smap_pan:
  • Test 1: Kernel command-line parameters (clearcpuid=smap, pan=off) and CPU flags.
  • Test 2: Control register telemetry from /proc/vuln_smap.
  • Test 3: Unprivileged execution of /bin/exploit_smap_pan and dmesg log audit.

5. Global Technical Presentation Script

"Hello everyone, and welcome to this session on Linux kernel memory isolation. Today, we are exploring SMAP on x86 and PAN on ARM64—two cornerstone hardware mechanisms that enforce strict access prevention between supervisor space and user space.

After the industry implemented SMEP and PXN to prevent user-space code execution from Ring 0, an attacker's immediate pivot was confused-deputy data dereference. An attacker simply allocates a fake credential or object in user memory, where addresses are completely predictable, and tricks a vulnerable kernel pointer into reading from it. Because the supervisor historically held full read/write privileges over user pages, the kernel happily consumed this untrusted data.

SMAP, controlled via CR4 bit 21, and PAN, controlled via PSTATE bit 22, close this critical hole at the hardware MMU level. With SMAP and PAN active, supervisor mode cannot read or write any user page marked with U/S=1 or EL0 access. Any uncoordinated dereference triggers an instant Page Fault or Data Abort.

When legitimate kernel syscall handlers need to copy user data, the kernel explicitly opens a controlled window: x86 executes the 'stac' instruction to set EFLAGS.AC, performs the validated copy, and immediately executes 'clac' to slam the door shut. On ARM64, dedicated instructions like LDTR and STTR enforce unprivileged translation without ever dropping the global PAN barrier.

In our dual-architecture verification, we observed an unprivileged exploit successfully reading fake objects when SMAP and PAN were disabled, and saw the hardware MMU strictly trap and block the attempt when hardening was enforced. Thank you."

6. Terminology & Architectural Reference

  • SMAP (Supervisor Mode Access Prevention):
  • x86 CPU hardware feature introduced in Intel Haswell. When CR4 Bit 21 is set, supervisor access to user pages (\(U/S=1\)) triggers #PF unless EFLAGS.AC is 1.
  • PAN (Privileged Access Never):
  • ARMv8.1-A architectural security extension. When PSTATE.PAN (Bit 22) is set, EL1 loads or stores targeting EL0 memory trigger a Data Abort permission fault.
  • stac / clac (Set/Clear Alignment Check):
  • x86 instructions used to toggle EFLAGS.AC (Bit 18), creating a strictly scoped window for copy_from_user / copy_to_user.
  • LDTR / STTR (Load/Store Register Unprivileged):
  • ARM64 instructions that perform memory accesses with EL0 unprivileged attributes even when executed from EL1 supervisor mode.
  • Confused-Deputy Problem:
  • A class of security defect where a privileged entity (the kernel) is deceived into misusing its authority on behalf of an unprivileged actor (the attacker).
  • Fake Kernel Object:
  • An exploitation technique where an attacker constructs kernel-like structures in user-space memory to bypass KASLR and take advantage of lack of SMAP/PAN.
  • CONFIG_ARM64_SW_TTBR0_PAN:
  • Linux kernel software emulation of PAN for legacy ARMv8.0 cores, using TTBR0 page table swapping to invalidate user address space during kernel execution.
